Nikon Z 400mm 2.8 TC VR S
Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S
Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S – Super Telephoto Lens for the Highest Demands. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is a super telephoto lens from the S-Line for Nikon Z-mount cameras, designed for professionals in wildlife, sports, and action photography. It combines a 400mm focal length with a fast f/2.8 aperture and an integrated 1.4x teleconverter, which can be extended to 560mm (f/4) via a switch – without any noticeable loss of quality. Weighing in at 2,950 g, it is remarkably light for a lens in this class, and thanks to its optimized weight distribution (center of gravity closer to the bayonet mount), it can also be used handheld – a real advantage for long field sessions. Optical excellence: The optical construction consists of 25 elements in 19 groups, including 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, 1 Super ED element, 2 fluorite lenses, and 1 SR (Short-wavelength Refractive) lens. This combination minimizes chromatic aberrations and distortion, ensuring exceptional sharpness right to the corners of the image – even at its widest aperture of f/2.8. Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings provide Nikon's highest level of anti-reflective performance, effectively eliminating flare and ghosting, even in backlit situations. With the 560 mm teleconverter, image quality remains impressively high, making this lens versatile for shooting at varying distances. The maximum magnification is 0.17x (400 mm) or 0.23x (560 mm), and the minimum focusing distance is 2.5 m. Integrated teleconverter and flexibility: The built-in 1.4x teleconverter is a unique feature: An ergonomic switch on the right side allows you to change the focal length from 400 mm f/2.8 to 560 mm f/4 – instantly and without changing lenses. This is ideal for dynamic situations, such as wildlife or sporting events. For even greater reach, the lens is compatible with external Nikon Z teleconverters: With the Z TC-1.4x, it becomes a 784 mm f/5.6, and with the Z TC-2.0x, an 800 mm f/5.6. In combination with the internal teleconverter and TC-2.0x, a focal length of 1120 mm f/8 is even possible – a reach that hardly any other lens offers. Autofocus and Image Stabilization: The "Silky Swift" VCM (Voice Coil Motor) with optical ABS encoder delivers fast, precise, and virtually silent autofocus – perfect for photo and video shooting in sensitive environments. AF performance remains consistently high even with a teleconverter. Optical image stabilization (VR) offers up to 5.5 stops (CIPA standard), and even 6 stops when used with the Nikon Z 9 via Synchro-VR. A sports mode stabilizes the viewfinder image during panning, making it easier to track moving subjects. Handling and robustness: With a diameter of 156 mm and a length of 380 mm, the lens is large, but thanks to a weight reduction of approximately 1.7 kg compared to its F-mount predecessor (AF-S 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR) and its rearward center of gravity, it is exceptionally well-balanced. The magnesium alloy body is dustproof and splashproof, and the fluorine-coated front element protects against dirt and facilitates cleaning. It withstands temperatures from -10 °C to +40 °C – ideal for extreme conditions. Operation is well-designed: Four L-Fn2 buttons, an L-Fn knob, a memory set button, a customizable control ring, and a function ring for recalling saved focus positions offer intuitive control. The filter diameter is 46 mm (drop-in filter at the rear). Versatility for professionals: The aperture ranges from f/2.8 to f/22 (f/4 to f/32 with TC), the angle of view is 6°10’ (FX) or 4° (DX) at 400 mm. A focus limiter (6 m to ∞) optimizes AF speed at long distances. For videographers, it offers minimized focus breathing and virtually silent aperture control. The removable tripod foot (not directly Arca-Swiss compatible) ensures stability on tripods. Testing available.
